my advise is , Adobe After Effects , i know the name sounds more like a effects program , but actualy its the more precise editor i have found.For Audio/Video Editing is the best , its the photoshop of video... of corse , Adobe premiere can do real time with a DV camara , Vegas is user Friendly ...
From what i read in your post , sound like you project setings are not matching the clips setings , resolution/size , codec , frame rate , etc , something could be diferent.then your final result is not so good.
or could also be , many video editor software have a draft mode , so you can scratch video more easy , so it looks crispy .. but when you export , or render , the full quality comes ...
feel free to make questions about any software , i dont know that one your are using , if you start using premiere or after effects , just tell me ...
